What looked like Mexico’s moment is starting to look more like a new chapter for the LATAM business.

Foreign direct investment in Mexico rose for the fifth year in a row in 2025, to a record of about USD 40.9 billion. The US was the largest source of this investment.

Five straight years of growth point to a lasting shift. For domain resellers, that makes Mexico a clear growth opportunity.

When companies move into Mexico, they also need a local presence, and a Mexican domain shows local customers that the business operates in the country.

The next decision is between .mx and .com.mx. In this article, we look at:

The difference between .mx and .com.mx

Why .mx brands also hold .com.mx

Which clients to pitch

How to sell the .mx bundle

How to add .mx to your reseller portfolio with Openprovider

.mx vs .com.mx: leading with .mx

For most brands entering Mexico, the best setup is .mx as the main address, with .com.mx registered alongside it. .mx is the short, direct Mexican domain, and it already holds around 30% of all Mexican names. .com.mx, meanwhile, holds around 66.4%.

NIC México, the organization that runs .mx, opened it to direct registration in 2009. A .mx domain puts the brand name right before the country ending, as in brand.mx. A .com.mx domain adds .com in between, as in mercadolibre.com.mx.

Both are open to anyone in the world, with no need for a Mexican address or company. Both are also country domains for Mexico, and Google treats a ccTLD (country-code top-level domain) as a strong sign that a website is meant for that country.

Availability is another reason to lead with .mx. There are about 449,000 .mx names, against 166.6 million .com names, so far fewer .mx names are taken. ccTLDs as a group keep growing too: they reached 148.6 million registrations in mid-2026, up 5.2 million in a year, not far behind the 166.6 million registered in .com.

The table below shows the main differences.

.mx

.com.mx

Format

brand.mx (second level)

brand.com.mx (third level)

Share of Mexican domains

30.6%

66.4%

Best for

The main brand address

A redirect to the main .mx address

Knowing the difference is the first step. The next is to show clients why a .mx brand still needs .com.mx beside it.

A .mx brand with .com.mx beside it keeps every Mexican visitor

Registering .com.mx alongside .mx protects the client’s traffic. .com.mx is the most common Mexican extension, so a .mx brand without the matching .com.mx risks losing visitors who type the more familiar ending. Keeping .mx as the main address and redirecting .com.mx to it gives the client one brand, one main address and no confusion.

Resellers call this defensive registration: buying the versions of a name that customers are likely to type, so nobody else can use them. Without it, a competitor or a scammer can register the .com.mx and copy the brand. A lookalike site can catch the client’s visitors and damage trust in the real one.

Registry .MX, the registry service behind .mx, makes .mx domains easy to check. It offers its own DNS diagnostic and WHOIS lookup tools, so you and your clients can check a domain’s setup and owner quickly.

With the case for .mx made, the next step is to know which clients need it most.

Pitch .mx to these five client types

The best time to pitch .mx is when a client opens a Mexican company, office or sales channel.

The strongest leads are manufacturers moving production to Mexico, logistics firms, SaaS companies adding Spanish, cross-border online stores and nonprofits. For each one, pitch a .mx on the brand name, with .com.mx as a redirect, plus SSL and email authentication from day one.

Use this table to spot the right moment with each type of client.

Client type

Trigger

What to sell

US or Canadian manufacturer

Opens a plant in Mexico (nearshoring)

.mx, .com.mx as a redirect, SSL, email authentication

Logistics or 3PL (third-party logistics) firm

Adds Mexican routes or warehouses

.mx, .com.mx as a redirect, Premium DNS

SaaS company

Launches a Spanish-language version

.mx for the product, .com.mx as a redirect

Ecommerce brand

Starts selling cross-border into Mexico

.mx, .com.mx as a redirect, SSL

Nonprofit or foundation

Opens a Mexican office or chapter

.mx, plus .org.mx

Once you know which clients to call, the easiest way to sell .mx is one clear package.

Sell the .mx bundle as one line item

Present .mx as one bundle, so the client approves a single offer. A bundle also adds more products to every order. Bring it up the moment the client mentions a Mexican company, office or launch.

A complete .mx bundle includes:

.mx on the brand name, as the main address

.com.mx on the same name, as a redirect to the main address

.org.mx for nonprofits and foundations

SSL, so the site loads securely from the first day

Email authentication with EasyDMARC, which proves that emails come from the client and stops others from sending fake mail in its name

Premium DNS, for faster and more reliable DNS

Once the client agrees to the bundle, look at the term length too. Offering multi-year terms on the domains locks in renewals for you and keeps the client’s .mx address safe for longer. All that is left is a platform that makes the bundle easy to deliver.

How to add .mx to your reseller portfolio with Openprovider

With Openprovider, adding .mx domains to your catalog does not require a separate registry agreement, a new accreditation or a parallel workflow. .mx and .com.mx run through the same platform, the same API and the same WHMCS module as every other TLD you already sell.

Openprovider Membership gives you .mx and .com.mx at cost price, for registrations and renewals. This means more margin on every .mx bundle you sell, and room to offer clients competitive prices. Both domains sit alongside your .com and ccTLD registrations in the same Reseller Control Panel: one renewal view, one set of DNS tools, one billing relationship.

One tip for your integration: for registrants in Mexico or the US, .mx registrations check the state field, so make sure your integration fills it in correctly. If you also serve clients in Latin America, read why LATAM resellers should add .mx domains to their portfolio.

If your clients are expanding into Mexico and your current setup makes .mx hard to sell, create a free Openprovider account and start registering .mx domains.

Five years of rising investment point to .mx as a ccTLD primed for long-term growth, and the resellers who put it at the center of their Mexico offer now are the ones best placed to benefit.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can a foreign company register a .mx domain?

Yes. There is no residency or local presence requirement for .mx or .com.mx, so a business based anywhere can register both. For resellers, this makes .mx an option for every client that sells to Mexican customers.

Which is more popular in Mexico, .mx or .com.mx?

.mx holds about 30% of all Mexican domains and .com.mx holds 66.4% (October 2026). .mx is the shorter choice for new brands, and clients who hold both can keep .mx as the main address and redirect .com.mx to it.

Does .mx help SEO in Mexico?

Google treats country-code domains such as .mx as a strong sign that a website is meant for that country. For a business targeting Mexican customers, .mx sends that local signal.

What domains do companies moving to Mexico need?

The setup we recommend is a .mx on the brand name as the main address, with the matching .com.mx redirecting to it. Add SSL and email authentication from day one, so the new Mexican site is secure and its emails are trusted.

Who runs the .mx domain?

NIC México runs .mx through Registry .MX, its registry service, which offers its own DNS diagnostic and WHOIS lookup tools. Businesses register .mx domains through registrars such as Openprovider, and resellers sell them to clients through a registrar’s platform or API.

After more than 40 years of serving nonprofits and mission-driven organizations, .org is one of the most trusted domain extensions online.

For resellers, that trust has real commercial value. Your clients feel safe choosing .org, their supporters trust the address, and .org has a renewal rate of 77.1%, higher than .com.

This article explains where .org’s trust comes from, how PIR protects it, and how you can sell .org so your clients’ domains stay active and renew every year.

Is .org trustworthy? Yes, and that trust helps you sell it

.org is one of the most trusted domain extensions available. Public Interest Registry (PIR), a US nonprofit set up by the Internet Society, has been the registry behind it since 2003. The extension holds more than 12 million names, and PIR runs strong programs against domain abuse. A single website’s credibility still depends on the people who run it.

Anyone can register a .org domain. Nonprofit status isn’t required. Charities and associations use .org, and so do businesses, communities and individuals. The Internet Society created PIR in 2002 to manage .org, and the extension passed 12 million registrations in June 2026.

Supporters still judge whether a .org website is credible by what they find when they arrive: a secure connection, clear contact details and up-to-date content. That gives you a valuable role as a reseller, because the services you sell with the domain help your clients earn that trust. PIR protects trust across the whole extension, and its programs benefit your clients too.

PIR’s anti-abuse programs give your clients a cleaner .org to build on

PIR fights DNS abuse in .org, meaning phishing, malware and other attacks that use domain names. It does this through four programs:

The Quality Performance Index (QPI)

The Abuse Intervention Program

Free Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) tools for registrars

The NetBeacon Institute

Together, these programs reward clean registrars and act against persistent abuse.

Program

Since

What it does

What it means for resellers

Quality Performance Index (QPI)

2019

Scores registrars on abuse, renewals, usage, SSL and DNSSEC

Rewards clean, active .org portfolios

Abuse Intervention Program

Announced 2025

Can temporarily limit new .org sales at persistent abusers

Keeps abusive registrars away from your clients’ namespace

IWF tools for registrars

2025

Free tools to disrupt child abuse websites

Faster action on the most serious abuse

NetBeacon Institute

2021

Industry-wide work to reduce DNS abuse

Simpler abuse reporting across the industry

QPI matters most for your sales. Alongside abuse, it checks whether .org domains renew, whether their owners use them, and whether they run SSL and DNSSEC, a security extension that protects domains against tampering. Those same signals can grow renewals in your own portfolio, as the next section shows.

Trusted, active .org domains bring you more renewals

.org domains that are clean and in active use renew more often, and that is how trust turns into recurring revenue for resellers.

PIR reports that registrars taking part in QPI saw their .org renewal rates improve by about 4%. A domain your client relies on every day is a domain they keep paying for.

A client who runs a website, a donations page or email on a .org address depends on it, because an expired domain breaks the links their supporters, members and partners use. A domain registered just in case, with nothing behind it, is much easier for a client to drop at the end of the year.

For market-wide .org renewal data, see our article on adding .org to your portfolio. You control what happens after the sale: whether the domain goes live, and whether it carries the security services that keep supporters’ trust. The next section shows five simple ways to build both into the way you sell .org.

Five ways to sell .org with trust built in, so it keeps renewing

Resellers sell .org that renews by offering it to the right clients, bundling SSL and DNSSEC from the first sale and getting the domain live straight away. These five steps fit into the hosting and service packages you already sell.

Offer .org as the nonprofit domain your clients need: nonprofits, associations, foundations, community groups and mission-driven businesses all have a clear reason to use .org, and many already sit in your client base.

Bundle security with every .org: add an SSL certificate so the site loads over a secure connection, and Premium DNS with DNSSEC to protect the domain against tampering. For email, add DMARC, a standard that stops others from sending email in your client’s name.

Set the domain up at the point of sale: connect the website or email when you register the domain, because domains in active use are the ones that renew.

Offer protective .org registrations to brand clients: a client with a strong .com brand can register the matching .org so nobody else can use it. Our .org vs .com guide helps clients decide which one to lead with.

Use PIR’s marketing on your own: PIR runs regular campaigns that give you ready-made stories about .org. For example, in 2026 it ran “The First Lap”, a campaign with Mission 44 on Formula 1 platforms, and the annual .ORG Impact Awards. Use moments like these in your newsletters and social posts.

You can run every one of these steps from a single Openprovider account.

How to add a .org domain to your reseller portfolio with Openprovider

With Openprovider, adding .org to your catalog doesn’t require a separate registry agreement, a new accreditation or a parallel workflow. .org runs through the same platform, the same API, the same WHMCS module and the same Openprovider Membership as every other TLD you sell.

SSL certificates, Premium DNS and EasyDMARC sit in the same Reseller Control Panel, so you can bundle the full trust package in one order. Openprovider is also a partner of PIR, the registry behind .org.

Most of the attention in the domain industry goes to acquisition: new registrations, launch campaigns and first-year growth targets. For a domain reseller, long-term success depends on what happens a year later, when each of those domains comes up for renewal and a payment card, a contact email or a client’s assumption can decide whether it stays active.

That makes the new .co expired domain policy worth a close look. In this article, we look at:

It requires every expired .co domain to complete the normal domain lifecycle. Registrars and resellers cannot auction, warehouse or transfer an expired .co to a new owner without written approval from the .CO Registry, and the original registrant keeps full rights to renew or restore it.

The domain lifecycle covers the stages after a domain expires: a period where the owner can renew at the normal price, a restore period with an added fee, and finally deletion, when the registry removes the domain. Our guide on what happens when a domain expires walks through each stage in more detail.

Two practices now need registry approval for .co:

Pre-deletion auctions, where a registrar sells an expired domain before the registry deletes it.

Warehousing, where a registrar keeps an expired domain for itself. The registry still allows backorders, which register a domain once the registry deletes it, because they use normal registration.

For your clients, the result is simple: their .co domain stays theirs for the whole lifecycle, and that gives you a strong point to raise in your next sales conversation.

Why the policy makes .co easier to sell

The .co expired domain policy applies to domain resellers as well as registrars. It covers all Registrar-Related Parties, so if you sell .co to your own customers, you follow the same lifecycle rules, and your clients keep their right to renew.

That gives you a clear message for business clients. A missed renewal date gives them time to act, with the full lifecycle to renew and a restore period after that, and the registry applies this rule to every registrar that sells .co. For a client choosing a domain to build a business on, that protection makes .co an easier decision.

The policy also puts more weight on your own renewal process. Once a client’s .co completes its lifecycle, the registry deletes it and anyone can register the name, so a reliable renewal process keeps every .co in your portfolio active and bringing in recurring revenue.

Clients who like this protection often ask a follow-up question: who runs .co, and is it a safe long-term choice?

Who runs .co, and why your clients can trust it

CentralNic, part of Team Internet, has run the .co registry since October 3, 2025. It operates .co with CCI on behalf of MinTIC, Colombia’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies. The move to CentralNic transferred 3.3 million .co domains in 29 hours, which CentralNic describes as one of the largest TLD migrations to date.

.co is a country code top-level domain (ccTLD), which lets the registry set its own policies for every registrar that sells it. The expired domain policy is one of those decisions, and it gives your clients the same lifecycle protection wherever they registered their name. Our .co anniversary post covers how .co grew from Colombia’s country code into a global choice for startups.

A stable registry gives your clients confidence in .co, and your renewal process decides how much of that protection reaches them.

Four ways to reduce missed .co renewals across your portfolio

Resellers reduce missed .co renewals with four controls: auto-renew by default, multi-year registration terms, early renewal notices and automated expiry handling. Together, these controls catch many of the renewals that would otherwise slip through when a client forgets, and they give clients who want to keep their domain every chance to do so.

Each one protects both your client’s domain and your recurring revenue, and they work for hosters, MSPs and agencies alike:

Turn on auto-renew by default: clients who want to let a domain go can switch it off, and the rest renew automatically, with no one on your team stepping in.

Offer multi-year terms: your clients can register or renew a .co for up to five years in total, which leaves them fewer renewal dates to manage and gives you longer-term revenue.

Send renewal notices early: send them to an address the client checks, and repeat them as the expiry date gets closer.

Automate expiry handling: connect renewals to your billing system through an API or a plugin, so your team sees a failed payment before the domain expires.

Your .co clients are the best place to start this quarter, and running all four controls from one platform is the easiest step of all.

How to add a .co domain to your reseller portfolio with Openprovider

With Openprovider, .co runs through the same platform, the same API, the same WHMCS module and the same Openprovider Membership as every other TLD you already sell.

Openprovider Membership gives you cost-price access to Openprovider-accredited TLDs, including .co, with no markup added between you and the registry. That leaves more room for your own margin on every .co renewal. The domain sits alongside the rest of your portfolio in the same Reseller Control Panel, with one renewal view and one place to manage auto-renew and renewal notices.

Sell .co at cost price with an Openprovider Membership

If your clients rely on .co and you want more control over their renewals, create a free Openprovider account and start managing your .co domains in one place.

With the new policy protecting every .co registrant, the resellers who pair it with a reliable renewal process are the ones best positioned to keep those clients for years.

Frequently asked questions

What is the new .co expired domain policy?

The .CO Registry Policy on Expiring Domain Names took effect on October 1, 2026. It requires every expired .co domain to complete the normal domain lifecycle, and it stops registrars and resellers from auctioning, warehousing or transferring an expired .co to a new owner without written registry approval.

Can I still renew an expired .co domain?

Yes. The original registrant keeps the right to renew or restore an expired .co until the lifecycle ends and the registry deletes it. For resellers, this means a client who misses a renewal date still has time to act.

Can registrars still auction expired .co domains?

Only with written approval from the .CO Registry. The registry still allows backorders on deleted domains, because they go through normal registration.

Does the .co policy apply to domain resellers?

Yes. The policy covers registrars and all Registrar-Related Parties, including resellers. If you sell .co to your own customers, the same lifecycle rules apply to every .co in your portfolio.

Who runs the .co registry?

CentralNic, part of Team Internet, has run the .co registry since October 3, 2025, working with CCI on behalf of MinTIC, Colombia’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies.

Is .co a safe choice for business clients?

Yes. CentralNic runs .co with CCI on behalf of MinTIC, Colombia’s ICT ministry , and the expired domain policy gives every registrant the full lifecycle to renew or restore their domain before deletion.

Can I sell .co domains through WHMCS?

Yes. Openprovider resellers can sell .co through the Openprovider WHMCS module and the Openprovider API. .co sits in the same catalog as the other extensions you sell, so you can add it to your hosting packages inside a system you already use.
