Openprovider Podcast: Inside the frontlines of cybersecurity in the AI age

Most AI announcements in the domain industry focus on what an agent can do. They detail how many tasks it covers and how many tools it connects to. An infrastructure provider that resells domains to its own customers needs to know how much authority the AI has, and when a person steps in to make the call.

Openprovider AI runs in four places:

Trust and abuse scoring

Identity checks at signup

Support automation

A domain management co-pilot.

Openprovider’s in-house AI team builds and runs each one around the same question: is the system confident enough to act, or should a person decide?

Our blog on solving domain management with AI covered the general benefits of AI. This article shows how our own systems work, starting with the one rule they all follow.

One rule keeps a person in charge of every uncertain decision on your domains

Every Openprovider AI system follows the same rule: confidence decides who acts.

Each system gives every decision a confidence value, a score for how sure it is about its own answer. With high confidence, the system acts on its own, and with lower confidence, it sends the case to a person. When it has too little information to judge, it takes no action.

Abuse scoring is the first place we apply the rule, because a wrong decision there affects your customers’ domains.

Risk scores with confidence values protect your customers from wrongful suspensions

Openprovider AI gives every domain on our platform a risk score from 0 to 100, plus a confidence value and a risk band, a label that groups scores into levels of risk. Our AI team built the score from around ten independent analyzers that run in parallel. Each analyzer checks a different kind of evidence, such as how the domain name is built or whether it imitates a known brand through a small spelling change, a tactic called typosquatting.

The system resolves obvious cases in milliseconds on a fast path and runs ambiguous ones through every analyzer before it acts or passes the case to our abuse team. Around the score, a classifier sends each abuse report to the right queue, bulk classification sorts large takedown requests, and anomaly detection flags sudden changes in abuse volume. Our article on how Openprovider handles domain abuse explains the policy and suspension process.

For a reseller, this means we stop real abuse faster and suspend fewer legitimate customers by mistake, so your team handles fewer escalations from clients. Abuse handling also affects your reputation: Interisle’s Phishing Landscape 2026 research found that attackers registered about three quarters of phishing domains in recent years specifically for phishing.

We keep the weights, thresholds and specific signals behind these scores private, because publishing them would show abusers how to avoid detection. Our identity checks start even earlier, before an account can register its first domain.

Real-time identity checks keep bad actors off your platform from the first signup

Openprovider AI checks every new account in real time with a set of small models, each built for one task:

Validating documents

Authenticating users

Matching faces

Detecting AI-generated documents.

Together, these models run KYC and KYB checks (know your customer and know your business) during signup. People on our team review only the edge cases, so legitimate businesses sign up quickly.

Once an account is live, the same confidence rule helps Isabella answer its support tickets faster.

Faster support answers, with a person checking every uncertain reply

Isabella, our support automation tool, uses classical machine learning to read each ticket, work out what the customer needs and find the right knowledge base article. A large language model then writes the reply.

Isabella sends high-confidence replies automatically, saves medium-confidence replies as drafts for a support agent to review, and leaves low-confidence tickets for a person to handle from the start. It works in four languages and learns from every reply an agent edits or approves. Isabella is live in our support team and rolling out as chat in the Reseller Control Panel. Customers get faster first responses, and Isabella resolves more tickets without a person getting involved. Our article on AI and automation in hosting covers the wider industry.

Isabella answers questions, while the co-pilot takes actions on your domains, so its permissions matter even more.

The co-pilot automates domain work with the permissions your team already has

The Openprovider co-pilot lets your team manage domains by typing requests in plain English. Staff without API skills can ask it to find a domain, calculate costs, explain a setting, open the right screen or carry out a task.

Some platforms give AI agents admin-level access. Our AI team designed the co-pilot to act only as the logged-in user, with that user’s own access token. It has no admin identity and no direct access to our database.

The co-pilot can immediately run read-only tasks, such as searches and calculations. It can only perform write actions from a fixed list, so it cannot create new operations. For most write actions, it shows a preview card with the exact action and settings and waits for the user to approve, and deletes and bulk changes need a separate hard confirmation. Every action goes through the Openprovider API and its standard checks.

The co-pilot uses the role and permissions you already gave each team member, so you can delegate domain work to more of your team without giving anyone extra access. Use these five questions to check how much authority any AI has over your customers’ domains.

Question to ask any AI that touches your domains

Openprovider’s answer

Whose identity does it act with?

The logged-in user’s, using that user’s own token. It has no admin identity.

Can it invent new operations?

No. It can only perform write actions from a fixed list.

Which actions need approval?

Most write actions, after a preview card shows the exact action and settings.

Which actions need a hard confirmation?

Deletes and bulk changes.

Can it see more than the user can?

No. It has no direct database access and sees only what the user’s account allows.

We apply the same care to billing, where AI checks that Members pay the right price.

Continuous billing checks keep cost-price Membership pricing accurate

Registries start and end promotions all the time, and each change affects what Openprovider pays and what Members pay. Openprovider AI compares the two prices continuously and flags any gap as soon as it appears. It checks both directions: that Members get registry discounts while they apply, and that Member prices update when a promotion ends. This keeps cost-price pricing accurate on eligible TLDs, so you can plan your margins on correct numbers.

Clear AI rules and human sign-off protect every change to your platform

The Openprovider AI team has built finance automations, automated QA testing and a pipeline that turns a Jira ticket into a pull request, a proposed code change ready for review. These tools have saved our organization tens of hours of manual work so far, with hundreds more expected once planned projects ship. The team is also testing a model-agnostic “software factory” that can run on different AI models, so Openprovider does not depend on a single AI vendor.

An AI ambassador program scores teams on the AI-powered processes they ship, our Security team owns the list of approved AI tools, and a person signs off on any significant or customer-facing change. The team is already building the next tools for the Reseller Control Panel.

AI-driven onboarding and an AI website builder are on the roadmap for your Reseller Control Panel

Two new tools are on the roadmap for the Reseller Control Panel: an AI-driven onboarding flow and an AI website builder. Neither has shipped yet, and we will share details closer to release.

Registrar-scale data gives Openprovider AI an edge that competitors cannot license

Any company can license the same AI models we use. Openprovider has built the data those models learn from over more than 22 years: registration, abuse and reconciliation records at registrar scale. This data makes our models accurate, and a culture of testing and shipping keeps improving them.

If you are deciding whether to trust a registrar’s AI with your customers’ domains, start with the questions below.

Questions to ask before you trust Openprovider AI with your domains

How does Openprovider use AI?

Openprovider uses AI in four places: trust and abuse scoring, identity checks, support automation and a domain management co-pilot. It also uses AI to check billing. Each system acts alone only when it is confident.

Is it safe to let an AI agent manage domains?

It depends on the agent’s authority. The Openprovider co-pilot acts only as the logged-in user, uses a fixed list of write actions and asks for approval before most changes.

What does human in the loop mean for Openprovider AI?

A person reviews every case the AI is not confident about, and the co-pilot waits for the user’s approval before most changes.

Who builds Openprovider AI?

Openprovider’s in-house AI team builds and runs every system in this article.

Combining affordability and domain availability, .uk is highly attractive to businesses and entrepreneurs across the United Kingdom alike. And now, with Nominet introducing .UK Standardisation, .uk is about to become even more attractive in 2027.

In this article, we look at:

Why .uk sells so well to UK clients

How .uk compares to .co.uk

What Nominet’s 2027 changes mean for resellers

Three practical ways to sell more .uk to the clients you already have

How to add .uk to your reseller portfolio with Openprovider

Why does .uk sell so well to UK clients?

A .uk domain tells a British buyer that a business is local and legitimate, which supports both customer trust and visibility in local search results. For any business selling to UK customers, .uk gives that local signal in a short, clean address that is easy to say, type, and remember.

Anyone can register a .uk domain. Nominet, the registry that runs .uk, has no UK presence requirement, so a client based in Spain or the Netherlands can register one as easily as a business in Manchester. That makes .uk an easy conversation for any agency, hoster, or MSP with clients trading in the UK.

The question most clients ask next is how .uk compares to .co.uk.

How does .uk compare to .co.uk?

.co.uk is the legacy domain for UK businesses and the address British customers have known for decades. That long history comes at a cost for anyone registering today, because businesses claimed most short, memorable .co.uk names years ago.

A .uk domain carries the same UK signal in a shorter form, and it opened for direct registration in 2014, so clients have a far better chance of securing a clear .uk name that matches their brand. That makes .uk the strongest option when a client’s first-choice .co.uk name is already taken.

For most clients, the best setup is to register both .uk and .co.uk, with .co.uk redirecting to .uk. The client gets the shorter .uk address and protects their brand, so no one else can use the matching name. For you, that means a second domain on the invoice and another renewal on the account. You can compare both on our .uk and .co.uk pages.

Availability and a strong UK signal already make .uk easy to sell, and the upcoming registry changes in 2027 give resellers one more reason to offer it.

What Nominet’s 2027 changes mean for resellers

In early 2027, Nominet will introduce .UK Standardisation, an update to the systems and policies behind every .uk domain. The update brings .uk in line with the way most other domains already work.

Three changes matter most for resellers:

Faster .uk transfers. From 9 February 2027, .uk replaces IPS tags (the registrar labels used to move .uk domains between providers) with a standard Transfer Authorisation Code. .uk transfers that could take up to 45 days will complete in minutes.

.uk renewals that follow familiar rules. The .uk lifecycle lines up with generic top-level domains (gTLDs) such as .com. Your systems no longer need separate renewal and expiry logic for .uk.

Fewer requests sent back to the registry. Registrars get full control of the .uk lifecycle, so your team can handle more customer requests directly instead of passing them to Nominet.

With less admin, your team has more time to sell .uk, and the next section shows three easy ways to do it.

Three ways to sell more .uk to the clients you already have

Resellers sell more .uk domains by building them into the packages and client lists they already manage. These three approaches work for hosters, MSPs, and agencies alike:

Bundle .uk by default: include a .uk domain in every UK hosting package from the first quote. The domain becomes part of the offer, and your team avoids a separate sales conversation at checkout.

Sell .uk as brand protection: offer .uk alongside the client’s existing .co.uk as a brand protection package. Each UK client moves from one domain to two, which doubles your domain attach rate (the number of domains each client holds with you) and adds another yearly renewal.

Sweep your client base: pull a list of UK clients who hold .co.uk but not .uk, and send them one clear offer for the matching .uk. A single campaign reaches every client who already fits, and each yes adds a renewal that repeats every year.

Your UK client list is the best place to start this quarter, and adding .uk to your setup is the easiest step of all.

How to add a .uk domain to your reseller portfolio with Openprovider

With Openprovider, .uk runs through the same platform, the same API, the same WHMCS and HostBill modules, and the same Openprovider Membership as every other TLD you already sell.

Openprovider Membership saves you 22% on every .uk registration and renewal compared to our non-Member retail prices. This means more margin on every .uk you sell and a clear view of what each renewal costs you across your UK client base. The domain sits alongside your .com and ccTLD registrations in the same Reseller Control Panel – one renewal view, one set of DNS tools, one billing relationship.

If your UK clients are asking for a local address and your current setup makes .uk hard to offer, create a free Openprovider account and start registering your .uk domains.

The UK remains one of Europe’s most important digital markets, and the resellers who put .uk at the center of their UK offer now are the ones best placed to grow with it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a business outside the UK register a .uk domain?

Yes. Nominet, the .uk registry, has no residency requirement for .uk or .co.uk, so a business based anywhere can hold a .uk domain. For resellers, this makes .uk an option for every client that sells to British customers, including clients based outside the UK.

Should I recommend .uk or .co.uk to my clients?

Many businesses register both to protect their brand. .co.uk is the long-established choice and holds the majority of UK registrations. .uk has been open for direct registration since June 2014, which gives it greater availability for short and popular names. Clients who hold both can redirect one domain to the other.

What is changing for .uk domains in 2027?

On 9 February 2027, Nominet will move .uk to a new registry platform as part of a five-year program called .UK Standardisation. The changes cover how .uk domains transfer between registrars and how they renew and expire, bringing .uk closer to the way gTLDs such as .com already work.

Who manages .uk domains?

Nominet has managed the .uk country code since 1996, which covers .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk and shorter names such as example.uk. Nominet sets the registration rules for those extensions. Businesses register .uk domains through registrars such as Openprovider, and resellers sell them to clients through a registrar’s platform or API.

Can I sell .uk domains through WHMCS?

Yes. Openprovider resellers can sell .uk and .co.uk through the Openprovider WHMCS module, HostBill and the Openprovider API. .uk sits in the same catalog as the other extensions you sell, so adding it to your hosting packages happens inside a system you already use.

uk_aerial_1124x400

For resellers selling into Chile, or building out a broader Latin America TLD offering, .cl is the local domain extension clients will ask for. You should therefore know the rules before you give your client a price.

Eligibility for .cl is straightforward. What catches resellers out is everything that happens after registration: what NIC Chile expects from the domain holder, what happens if a client’s data goes stale, and how a dispute plays out under a process that is separate from the UDRP most resellers know from generic TLDs.

This article covers who can register a .cl domain, what NIC Chile expects from the holder afterward, how .cl disputes work, and how to add .cl to your portfolio through Openprovider.

Key takeaways

Any natural or legal person, Chilean or foreign, can register a .cl domain.

A .cl domain can be registered or renewed for any term from 1 to 10 years, with no forced minimum.

Registrant data has to stay accurate. NIC Chile can delete a domain over incomplete or inaccurate identification data if it is not corrected within five calendar days.

Disputes run through NIC Chile’s own arbitration process, and the arbitrator’s decision cannot be appealed.

Anyone can register a .cl domain

Any natural or legal person can register a .cl domain, whether they are Chilean or foreign. This comes from article 7 of NIC Chile’s regulations.

One caveat: NIC Chile reserves the right to request proof of the holder’s identity in exceptional cases, so it is worth making sure the registrant details you submit match the client’s real identity.

For the wider case on why the Chilean market is worth investing in, see our Chile reseller guide.

The importance of keeping registrant data current

Every .cl registration needs an administrative contact. This contact acts as the holder’s representative for every regulatory purpose, disputes included, so it needs to be someone who can respond if NIC Chile or a third party gets in touch.

Registration data must be complete and accurate, and the holder is obliged to keep it up to date for as long as they hold the domain. Under article 17 of NIC Chile’s regulations, incomplete or inaccurate identification data is grounds for deletion. NIC Chile can request a correction by email, and if the data is not fixed within five calendar days, the domain can be deactivated and then deleted.

For a reseller managing dozens of Chilean registrations, that five-day deadline belongs in your data-hygiene process. Weekends count, so a request that arrives on a Friday leaves very little working time.

Predictable .cl pricing makes quoting simpler

A .cl domain can be registered or renewed for any term from 1 to 10 years. NIC Chile’s registry price is the same for each year, so the registry cost grows evenly with the number of years the client chooses. The price you pay on top of that depends on your registrar.

That pricing predictability is worth building into how you quote. A client who wants a lower upfront cost can register for a single year. A client who wants to avoid an annual renewal conversation can go longer. Either way, the term is your decision to make with the client.

If a client’s domains are already spread across several providers, keeping track of individually chosen terms is the kind of detail that gets lost. Our piece on how fragmented infrastructure erodes margin at scale explains why that gap is expensive. Managing .cl in the same Reseller Control Panel (RCP) as the rest of your portfolio keeps every term and renewal date in one view.

Register brand names early: the first 30 days carry the most risk

After a .cl domain is registered, NIC Chile adds it to a public list of new registrations for 30 calendar days. During that time, anyone can ask NIC Chile to cancel the registration if they believe they have a better claim to the name, for example because it matches their company name or brand. They don’t need to prove that the holder did anything wrong. A revocation request costs CLP 46,000 under NIC Chile’s current fee schedule.

After the 30-day window, the bar rises. A challenger then has to show that the registration is abusive, which means meeting all three of these conditions:

The domain is identical or confusingly similar to a name or trademark the challenger has prior rights to.

The holder has no rights or legitimate interest in the domain.

The domain was registered or is being used in bad faith.

The first month is when a new .cl is most exposed. If a client is registering a brand-related .cl name, it is worth registering it well before launch, so the 30-day window closes before the brand goes public.

How .cl disputes work outside the UDRP

.cl disputes do not use ICANN’s Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP), the process most resellers know from generic TLDs. Anyone who believes a .cl registration harms their rights can request revocation under NIC Chile’s own dispute policy.

The parties can agree on an arbitrator between themselves. If they don’t, NIC Chile appoints one from a list published on its website. The arbitrator’s decisions cannot be appealed, a right every registrant waives by holding a .cl domain. For contractual matters outside the arbitrator’s remit, the parties fall under the jurisdiction of the courts in Santiago.

While a revocation case is open, the domain is blocked: the holder cannot be changed and the domain cannot be deleted. The holder can still update the domain’s data unless the arbitrator orders otherwise. NIC Chile’s dispute resolution policy sets out the full procedure.

Plan for registry-level suspensions in your abuse process

Since a 2020 amendment to NIC Chile’s regulations, the registry can suspend a .cl domain temporarily or permanently if it was registered for phishing, malware distribution, botnet operation, or other technical abuse of the DNS.

For a reseller, this is an action the registry takes directly on a domain you manage and bill for, so your abuse-handling process should account for it.

Choose who receives NIC Chile’s emails before you register

NIC Chile sends every notification, including the five-day correction request, to the email addresses in the domain’s registration data. Keeping those addresses working is the holder’s exclusive responsibility.

If you use your own address as the reseller, you are responsible for anything that gets missed. If you use the client’s address, make sure someone monitors it, since a missed email does not pause the five-day deadline.

Either approach can work, as long as the choice is deliberate. If the client needs a monitored address, business email can be set up alongside the domain.

What to check before you quote a .cl domain

A few details decide whether a .cl registration stays trouble-free after the sale, so it’s worth confirming them with the client before you send a quote:

The term the client wants, and the total upfront cost for that term

Who holds the contact email, and whether someone monitors it

Whether the registrant details match the client’s real identity

Whether the client has a Chilean trademark worth defending, given the higher risk in the first 30 days

Sell .cl alongside the rest of your portfolio

With Openprovider, .cl sits alongside more than 2,000 TLDs in one RCP, so you can register, renew, and manage every client domain in the same place, whether through the panel or the API.

Openprovider Membership gives you cost-price access to Openprovider-accredited TLDs, with no markup added between you and the registry. That leaves more room for your own margin on every domain you sell.
