Spring is back!
Keep Calm spring is here. It is time to stop and enjoy the weather with longer daylight to read our newsletter.
Successful lunch & learn website security
The second edition of our Lunch & Learn happened on the 13th of February in Rotterdam. The topic “website security” attracted a very enthusiastic audience and we were fully booked. We have no date for our next Lunch & Learn, but will share that through our newsletters.
Try WordPress Toolkit in Plesk for free
Try out WordPress Toolkit for free. Together with Plesk we are welcoming you to try WordPress Toolkit that will help you and your customers to manage and automate WordPress instances from the single dashboard via few clicks. WordPress Toolkit was already included into more senior Plesk license editions WebPro & WebHost by default, but now and till the end of July you can add WordPress Toolkit to your WebAdmin license at no cost.
To try it out you either need to add WordPress Toolkit as an additional feature when ordering a new license in Openprovider Control Panel or by modifying your existing WebAdmin license.
Strengthened security policy API usage
Security is always an important topic at Openprovider. One of the available security features, currently optional, is whitelisting of IP addresses for your integrations. This is a simple way to protect your Openprovider account from unauthorized use. Following the industry’s best practices, we will start enforcing this for our API as from the 15th of April 2020.
From that date onwards, the Openprovider API will only accept connections from IP addresses that have been whitelisted in your account. To prevent service disruptions, simply add all IP addresses from which your integrations send API requests to the IP whitelist table in your Openprovider account. Instructions can be found in our Knowledge Base.
If you are currently connecting to the Openprovider API without active IP whitelist, we will reach out to you personally with more details.
Security in RCP
Although IP whitelisting will not be enforced yet for access to the reseller control panel, we strongly recommend to secure your RCP account as well. You can do so by setting up 2-factor authentication and/or IP whitelisting. Do you want to know more about our security features? Read our blog post!
.me releases premium domains
The .me registry has released almost 2.800 previously reserved domain names as premium names. This means domain names like 8.me, choose.me, credit.me, single.me, and 4g.me now become available for registration.
A .me premium domain renews at its regular price; only the initial registration is charged at premium price. To register a premium domain, simply log in to the control panel and start the registration process similar to any other domain name! .me premiums start at €625,00.
Contact form integrated with knowledge base
Over the last couple of months, we have invested a lot of time and care in our Knowledge Base. We are proud to see that the Knowledge Base views have increased by 24% over the past quarter.
Because most of the questions asked to our Sales and Support departments are already documented, we are introducing the “Submit a request” form in our Knowledge Base. After all, not having to ask a question is much faster than waiting for our Support department to answer!
In order to use this new form, visit our Knowledge Base on openprovider.help and click the link “Submit a request”:
This form will automatically provide you with suggestions which are linked to the question you are writing, proving you a much faster answer!
And if your answer is not in the list with suggestions, you can submit the question to our support and sales departments. This form will make sure it is automatically sent to the correct department, based on the category you select. This will optimise the efficiency within our departments and decrease the response time of your question.
Once you submit a question via this form to our sales or support department and you have an active Membership, your question will be handled quicker than via normal e-mail. We are rewarding our Membership resellers with a faster response!
Changes to .gr domain registration
Effective from the 16th of March, we will enhance support for Greek (.gr) domain names. First of all, you will find new second level domains and a new top level domain available for registration: in addition to .com.gr, you can apply for a .net.gr, .org.gr or .edu.gr domain as well. The new top level domain to add is the Greek IDN .ελ (.xn--qxam).
Greek characters are supported in all extensions, but be sure not to mix Latin and Greek alphabets.
The renewal date offset will change from 10 days to 3 days before the registry’s expiration date, which means that you have a week longer to decide about renewal or expiration of a domain name.
Last but not least, the restore of .gr domains will be processed in realtime after the 16th of March.
Please note that as a part of those enhancements, an internal transfer to another registrar accreditation is performed. During this transfer, the registry will send a notification e-mail to the .gr domain name registrants, showing “Instra Corporation” as the new registrar. This notification is only to inform the registrant; no action is required or possible. The registrant can ignore this message.
.ar now available as top level domain
Argentina has opened its top level domain .ar for registration. This means you are no longer limited to the second level domain .com.ar.
.ar domains require a local presence, which is automatically included at no additional cost. As the registry relies on manual processes, registration, transfer and updates will not be realtime.
The price for .ar domains ranges from €111 to €125, depending on the tier of your Openprovider account. Domain updates are charged as well at €29. Supreme Members can find their price in the price list in the control panel.
You asked and we did it – .icu promotion is extended, and now available in Tiers, too
We are glad to start this spring with the truly good news about .icu promotion: From March 1 to June 30th 2020, the price of 1 year registration of .icu domain will be $1.18 with active membership plans and $1.99 in all tiers. This TLD has grown 15 times in volume since last year, so build on that success and sell big with us!

- • ICANN and Verisign Announce Proposed Amendment to .COM Registry Agreement
Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains by 7% each year in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. After a two year “freeze”, Verisign can increase prices by 7% annually during 2026-2029, then another two year “freeze”.
According to Engadget, ICANN will receive $20 million from Verisign as part of the new deal, spread over five years from January 1st 2021. That money, ICANN says, will help it “preserve and enhance the security, stability and resiliency of the DNS.” By comparison, marketing news site Coywolf says that Verisign’s profits are expected to rise by around $800 million as a result of the price hikes.
By means of the Registrar Stakeholder Group, we have filed a public comment expressing our concerns.
