Newsletter – September 2020

Summer is over, we’re back with more energy!

These last two months we have been working hard on improving our services for you. We know that you are now busy trying to offer your clients the best possible deals. That’s why we have some interesting offers for you in this newsletter. We also have some news about price changes you want to take into account.

Did you know people are inclined to type .com after a domain name? Check out this article to see why having a .com website is good for business.

New extensions and introduction of “update” fee (price change)

Some of the more exotic domain extensions involve additional fees for updating nameservers or contact data of registered domain names. Openprovider has never charged automatically for such updates, but handled it manually in close agreement with our customer. In some cases we didn’t even pass them on to the customer. With the growing volumes and the growing demand for more exotic domain names, we have automated this process as from today. This will not only eliminate manual steps, resulting in faster handling of your orders, but also enlarge our portfolio with more than 250 extensions. Of course, we will ensure that you will never face unexpected costs. Before we process a paid update, we will ask you for explicit approval, both in the control panel and the API. For those familiar with premium domains: the process is quite similar.

How does the concept of paid updates meet our brand promise of transparency? You can be sure that we will not charge you any update fees if there is no reason for it. Such reason can either be because our supplier charges a fee, or because an update requires non-negligible manual effort. A domain that can be updated automatically without costs will remain free of charge in Openprovider.

Part of our transparency is also, that we charge the updates in their native currency. Be aware that in some cases, this currency is different from the currency for other operations like registration and renew! In your control panel, all amounts are automatically converted, but if you use our API to retrieve price information, be sure to include the currency!

This release is rolled out in two phases:

  1. Effective immediately, we have added almost 250 extensions to our portfolio that are available for registration immediately.
    Newly added extensions (Excel)
  2. Effective from the 12th of October 2020, we will configure an “update” fee for the following extensions that are already active in Openprovider. This fee will be charged for each nameserver or contact change.

Introduction of Indian IDN extensions

India, the second-largest country in the world with over 1,3 billion citizens, has .in as its national extension, along with a couple of second level domains including .co.in and .org.in. However, did you ever think about it that this extension is written in the Western alphabet, whereas the native language of those 1,3 billion citizens uses a completely different alphabet?

Exactly for that reason, the Indian registry has just finished rolling out the internationalized version of their extensions. In fact: rolling out 15 different internationalized versions to cover all national languages, plus 7 different IDN second level domains:

Top-10 .in registrar

Did you know that Openprovider reached the top-10 of .in registrars earlier this year? Our international sales team is actively targeting the Indian market and we are proud of this important milestone.

Price increase .info and other Afilias extensions

On the 5th of January 2021, registry Afilias will increase the prices of various extensions in their portfolio. The table below lists the Member prices that will apply from this date; all tier prices will increase by the same amount. The new pricing applies to new registrations, transfers and renewals.

Remember that domains in those extensions can be registered for a period of up to 10 years. If you renew your domains before the 5th of January, you can still benefit from the current, lower prices for multi-year renewals.

Price increase .me domains

On the 21st of February 2021, the .me registry will increase its prices by €1,00. As a result, our prices will increase by the same amount for our Members and tier customers. The new Member price for .me domains will be €11,00. Note that the ongoing promotional price for new domains remains unchanged: the price of €11,00 only applies to multi-year registrations, transfers and renewals. Members will still pay the discounted price of €5,00 for new, 1-year .me registrations.

Price increase .nz domains

On the 1st of October 2020, the New Zealand registry will increase its prices. As a result, we will have to increase our prices as well. The price for the top level domain .nz will increase by NZD 7,80 for our Supreme Members and in all tiers. The price for the second level domains will increase by NZD 9,75 for our Supreme Members and in all tiers. The new pricing in tier 1 and 8 is in the table below; refer to the price list in your control panel after the 1st of October for prices in other tiers:

Price increase .za.com and .sa.com domains

CentralNic, the registry behind many second level domains, decided to increase the price of .za.com and .sa.com on the 25th of September 2020. The new Member price for new registrations, transfers and renewals will be $69,00. Tier prices will increase by $20,00.

Price increase .sc domains

The Seychelles registry for .sc has announced a price increase effective from the 1st of October 2020. The price for .sc domains will increase by $5,00 for all Members and in all tiers. The price for restores and premium domains will not change. Remember that you can register your .sc domains for a period of up to 10 years, so renewing upfront could save you up to $50 per domain.

Changes to .blog premium domain fees

From the 7th of October 2020, any .blog premium domain name will renew at the standard price. In other words, the premium price for .blog domains only applies to the first year of registration from that date on. This change applies to newly registered domain names, but also to domain names that are already registered. Existing domains that must be renewed before the 7th of October follow the current price policy, and will thus renew at their premium price. Furthermore, the registry will release all previously reserved three-character domain names and make them available for registration on that date. Those domain names will be sold as premium domains.

@opnotifications is used for release notes as well now

An additional step towards transparency: we started publishing release mentions in our twitter account. If the release is big enough to be posted in a separate article, we add a link to it. You will see these tweets in the same place as always – the dashboard of your control panel. Make sure your adblocker doesn’t cut social media widgets!

Improved communication expired domains

In order to improve the communication to our resellers, we have slightly changed the way in which we notify about expired domain names.

Since a few weeks, we do not only report expired domains in the renewal reminder e-mails that you receive regularly, but if the expiration is due to insufficient balance or another error, you will be notified in a separate e-mail as well. This e-mail has the same format as other domain notifications, and includes the reason why the domain could not be auto-renewed. It is sent to the administrative and (if available) the billing contact of your account.

Notifications are only sent for domains that have auto-renewal enabled, in order to prevent overload on e-mails.

Did you know…

… that you can configure the frequency of the renewal reminder e-mails? By default, they are sent daily, but if you have enabled auto-renew in your account, you can reduce the frequency in the auto-renewal settings in your account. The frequency can be reduced to once every 2 weeks.

Donuts introduces TrueName

76% of businesses reported being a victim of a phishing attack in 2019. Many of such attacks use domain names that are visually similar to existing domain names.

Portfolio registry Donuts has released a new domain protection feature called “TrueName”. TrueName blocks malicious domain imposters before they are able to strike, by rejecting all look-alikes of existing domain names.

As an example, consider the domain name example.domains. Somebody that wants to misuse the trust of the example.domains’ owner, may try to register the domain exаmple.domains. You don’t see it, but in the latter version the Latin character “a” is replaced by a Cyrillic “а”, which is visually similar. In line with those findings, Donuts has identified a big list of confusingly similar characters. That list is used to block domain names that are visually similar. This feature is not only rolled out for new domain names: any domain name registered before the 5th of August benefits as well from the added security. You don’t have to do anything! The similarity checks are performed on a per-domain level. In the above example, exаmple.domains is blocked but exаmple.support (another extension) is not.

New registry accreditation: .io, .ac, .sh

In our journey to offer our customers the best service and prices, we will soon activate our own accreditation for the extensions .io, .ac and .sh. All existing domains will move from our current registration partner to our own registrar account. We will perform this bulk transfer on the 12th of October. At that date, we will add those extensions to our Memberships at the following prices:

 .io.ac.sh
New registration$36.00$33.75$33.75
Transfer$36.00$33.75$33.75
Renewal$39.90$39.90$39.90
Restore (price also applies to tier customers)$45.00$45.00$45.00

We hereby ask you to inform your registrant(s) about this upcoming bulk transfer and the fact that all transfer rules and policies set by ICANN and the registry remain in effect. We hereby also ask you to offer the registrant(s) the option of opting out. Any domain that must not be transferred must be reported to us before the 23rd of September; those domains will remain at our previous provider and be charged at tier price.

No further action has to be taken by you; only be aware that the domains’ authorisation codes will change.

Short update about Brexit and .eu

On the 1st of February 2020, the United Kingdom left the European Union. As we informed you in earlier newsletters, this will cause registrants from the United Kingdom to be no longer eligible for .eu, .ею and .ευ domain names after the transition period. The transition period is scheduled to end on the 31st of December 2020.

The registry will inform all UK registrants by e-mail on the 1st of October and the 21st of December, urging them to update their registration data to an address in the European Union, if possible. Any non-compliant domain name will be withdrawn on the 1st of January 2021. One year later, the domains will be released for new registration again.

The registry regularly updates the Brexit-related information on their website.

Note that there is a chance that the transition period will be extended for up to 1 or 2 years. If that happens, the schedule outlined above will be adapted accordingly.
