About .com domain
You can register a .com domain through our API or control panel. This registration is real time and requires the following information:
- • the domain’s contact handles (owner, administrative, etc.)
- • two or more nameservers or a nameserver group
Note that, as for ICANN’s contact verification requirements, we are obliged to send an e-mail to the domain owner if his e-mail address was not verified before. Failure to respond to this e-mail may lead to suspension of any gTLD domain name with this same e-mail address in the owner contact.
Tip: Did you know that registry Verisign also offers the following internationalised variants of .com?
- • .コム (Japanese)
- • .קוֹם (Hebrew)
- • .닷컴 (Korean)
You can start the com domain transfer through our API or control panel.
This transfer requires the following information:
- • an authorisation code that you need to request at your current provider.
- • the domain’s contact handles (owner, administrative, etc.)
- • two or more nameservers or a nameserver group
A transfer for a com domain takes a maximum of 6 days to complete. The transfer can be rejected by the current provider or the owner of the domain during this period.
The registration period after a successful transfer will extend with 1 year, unless the transfer is ordered within the domain’s auto-renew grace period at the previous registrar.
Do you have any problems transferring your com domain? Please take a look at this extended article for possible solutions.

Update owner (trade) | A change of ownership for a .com domain name can be done by replacing the owner contact in the control panel. After saving the changes the change is processed realtime. Both the previous and the new registrant will receive an e-mail. This is a notification only, no action is required. |
Update other data |
A change of contact details or nameservers can be done by updating the associated handles or nameservers in the control panel. After saving the changes, the domain name will be updated in realtime. If as part of the update the domain owner’s e-mail address changes, we’re obliged to start a contact verification process if this new e-mail address was not verified before. Failure to respond to this e-mail may lead to suspension of any gTLD domain name with this same e-mail address in the owner contact. |
Delete / expiration | Explicit delete A delete of a domain is realtime. After a delete, the domain will be put in quarantine status (also called redemption period); in the table under “detailed TLD information” you can see how long this quarantine period lasts. During this period the domain can be reactivated. For 5 days after the quarantine period it gets status pendingDelete and will be deleted after those 5 days.ExpirationIf a domain expires (it is not renewed in time), Openprovider will not immediately delete the domain at the registry. Instead, it will be put in soft quarantine first. During the soft quarantine period, you can reactivate the domain without additional charges; you only pay for the renewal. |
Restore / reactivation |
A domain name can be restored during its quarantine period (also called redemptionPeriod). Under ‘detailed TLD information’ below you can find how long a domain stays in its quarantine period after the domain name has been deleted or expired. If a domain expired and a soft quarantine period applies (see the table below), restore is possible for the duration of the soft quarantine period plus the duration of the ‘normal’ quarantine period. A restore during the soft quarantine period is without additional costs (only the renewal is charged), while a restore during the normal quarantine period comes with additional costs. Soft quarantine only applies to expired domains; it never applies after sending a ‘delete’ command to Openprovider. |
