What is authoritative DNS?

Authoritative DNS, also known as authoritative nameservers, are the servers responsible for providing the official answers to DNS queries for a specific domain. These servers hold the authoritative information for a domain, such as the IP addresses of the domain's servers and other DNS records. When a user enters a domain name into their web browser, their device sends a DNS query to the authoritative nameservers for that domain to determine the corresponding IP address.

Authoritative DNS servers are typically managed by the organization or entity that owns the domain. They are responsible for updating and maintaining the DNS records for their domain, ensuring that the information is accurate and up-to-date. This includes adding new records, updating existing records, and removing outdated records as needed. By managing their authoritative DNS servers, organizations have control over how their domain is resolved and can ensure that users are directed to the correct servers when accessing their website or other online services.

In addition to authoritative DNS servers, there are also recursive DNS servers, which are responsible for resolving DNS queries on behalf of users. When a user's device sends a DNS query, it is typically sent to a recursive DNS server, which then queries the authoritative nameservers to obtain the necessary information. By understanding the role of authoritative DNS servers, organizations can ensure that their domain is properly configured and that users can access their online services without any issues.
